Tim Wilkerson, who surprised the Funny Car field by qualifying No. 1 at the season-opening event in Pomona, repeated those heroics Saturday at the 24th annual Checker Schuck’s Kragen NHRA Nationals at Firebird Int’l Raceway outside of Phoenix after an abbreviated two sessions of qualifying following Friday’s rainout. It is the 12th No. 1 spot in Wilkerson’s career. Brandon Bernstein and Allen Johnson parked their machines atop the Top Fuel and Pro fields, respectively, at the event, the second of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season.
